In your country, a man can marry a child. This child then becomes his wife. Should this man be legally allowed to have sex with his child-wife? North Carolina passed a Senate bill last week to raise the legal age to 16. Delware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland and Oklahoma: Allow teens who are pregnant or have already had a child to marry without parental consent. In Florida, Kentucky and Oklahoma, however, the young couple must have court approval. Maryland requires the minor to be at least 16 years old. Even with parental consent, many states require court approval if a person is 16 or younger. A nonprofit called Unchained at Last compiled statistics on marriages from 2000 to 2012. They found that in 38 states, more than 167,000 children — almost all girls, some as young as 12 — were married during that time, mostly to men aged 18 and older. It is estimated that the total number of child brides in America between 2000 and 2010 was nearly 248,000.
At least 31 percent were married to a spouse aged 21 or older, though the actual number is likely higher because some states did not require a spouse`s age. These marriages have even taken place in states that have legal rape laws. But you have a hard time protecting her and looking for that partner and signing a legal prenuptial agreement to protect your daughter and baby! One of the most notorious scandals surrounding child marriage is the fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), the largest polygamous sect in North America.
